Governance and committees

Transparent and consultative governance of the Faculty of Health and Behavioural Sciences is facilitated through the use of a series of representative committees.

Overarching strategy and management

The overarching strategy of the Faculty and its operational implementation is managed through the Faculty Management Committee, the Faculty Executive Committee and the Faculty Board.

Faculty Management Committee

The Faculty Management Committee oversees the day-to-day management of the business of the Faculty. It meets weekly, and its membership consists of the Executive Dean, the Associate Deans, the Faculty Executive Manager and the Director of Health Partnerships and Major Projects

Faculty Executive Committee

The Faculty Executive Committee provides advice to, and receives information from, the Executive Dean and other members of the Faculty leadership group on issues related to the strategic directions, the management and resources, and the teaching, research and engagement activities of the Faculty. It is the principal forum for discussion and information exchange between the Faculty Management Committee and the Heads of Schools, Directors of Centres and Managers of service units within the Faculty. The Executive Committee meets monthly.

Faculty Board

The Faculty Board is the broadest consultative and deliberative body of the Faculty with membership open to all staff members of the Faculty, representatives from other faculties and institutes of the University, and from selected professional bodies and external partners. The role of the Faculty Board is to provide advice and make recommendations to the Executive Dean on the strategic direction of the Faculty; academic policy matters of relevance to the Faculty; significant matters of detail concerning the curricula offered by the Faculty; teaching and learning, research and other academic initiatives of relevance to the Faculty; and any other matter referred to it by the Executive Dean. It meets biannually with one of those meetings usually held jointly with the Faculty of Medicine. Typical meetings include a report from the Executive Dean along with invited presentations from within or beyond the Faculty.

Teaching and Learning

The Faculty of Health and Behavioural Sciences' Teaching and Learning team is committed to enriching the student learning experience and supporting Schools to achieve excellence in all aspects of teaching and learning.

Teaching and Learning in the Faculty of Health and Behavioural Sciences is governed by the Faculty Teaching and Learning Committee and the Faculty Board of Studies.

Teaching and Learning Committee

The role of the Teaching and Learning Committee is to provide strategic advice to the Executive Dean on all matters relating to teaching and learning within the Faculty. The Committee meets every second month.

Terms of Reference

The role of the Faculty of Health and Behavioural Sciences Teaching and Learning Committee is:

  1. To foster an educational environment in the Faculty in which curriculum development, teaching and assessment are approached as professional activities and in which superior performance is expected, valued and rewarded.
  2. To consider and recommend to the Executive Dean, policies and practices related to curriculum development and teaching practices.
  3. To promote ways to recognise excellence in teaching and course development and to consider and review the related procedures.
  4. To devise strategies to promote recognition of excellence in course design, teaching and assessment and the development of strategies to support student learning.
  5. To monitor and improve the performance of the Faculty in attainment of University, national and international awards and grants for initiatives in teaching and student learning.
  6. To ensure that the Faculty contributes to the development of, and facilitates the implementation of, University policies and reports relating to teaching and learning.
  7. To encourage and share information on alternative and innovative modes of learning, e.g. application of technology, alternative use of space and time.
  8. To continue to develop and expand the Faculty’s Teaching and Learning Profile.
  9. To propose activities and projects consistent with the objectives of the University’s Strategic Plan and Teaching and Learning Profile.
  10. To provide advice to the Executive Dean on issues or policies relating to the Teaching Quality Assessment processes and funding.
  11. To develop appropriate processes and procedures for measuring program courses and student outcomes.
  12. To develop ways to increase the effectiveness of teaching and learning initiatives.
  13. To advise on staff development initiatives needed to support new and existing educational initiatives.

Board of Studies

The role of the Board of Studies is to advise on current and future issues that relate to the development, content, structure and rules pertaining to academic programs. The Board of Studies meets at least five times per annum.

Terms of Reference

The Board of Studies will advise the Executive Dean on:

  1. Proposals for the development of undergraduate and postgraduate coursework programs and other academic initiatives involving coursework students in Health and Behavioural Sciences (including programs where the HABS faculty contributes but are offered by other faculties).
  2. Proposed changes to courses, programs, entry requirements or semester of intake for undergraduate and postgraduate coursework programs in Health and Behavioural Sciences.
  3. Strategic developments in the fields, disciplines and professions relevant to the programs monitored by the Board of Studies.
  4. The performance of existing programs via reporting of Academic Program Review processes.
  5. Reports by Program Directors of Faculty programs.
  6. The establishment of working groups (as required) to provide advice on specific program developments.
  7. Opportunities for cross-disciplinary teaching within the Faculty and the University.
  8. Any other matter referred to it by the Executive Dean.

Research

Research in the Faculty of Health and Behavioural Sciences is governed by the HaBS Research Committee and the HaBS Higher Degree by Research (HDR) Committee.

Research Committee

This committee assists the Schools and Centres within the Faculty with all matters pertaining to research and research administration, including relevant policies, ethics, funding, grant preparation, research development, research dissemination and translation, and support for researchers at all levels. The Research Committee meets five times per year.

Higher Degree by Research (HDR) Committee

This committee assists the Schools and Centres within the Faculty with all matters pertaining to Higher Degree by Research (HDR) students and postgraduate research. The Higher Degree by Research Committee meets four times per year.

Workplace Health, Safety and Wellness

The Faculty operates a Health Safety and Wellness Committee in conjunction with the UQ Health Safety and Wellness division and is an integral step in implementing the University’s Health Safety and Wellness Policy (PPL 2.10.03)

Health Safety and Wellness Committee

The Faculty’s Health Safety and Wellness Committee is a consultative committee that helps the University comply with statutory workplace health and safety obligations. It is a forum for addressing broad health safety and wellness issues across the faculty as well as the development and implementation of procedures, guidelines and programs. The Committee meets quarterly and includes representatives from most areas of the Faculty.
