How do elite athletes juggle competing goals and demands while pursuing their sporting dream? What do athletes do when sport, work, study, or family commitments conflict? This study aims to better understand elite athlete wellbeing and career management.

We are seeking elite or professional athletes to participate, which involves the completion of one initial baseline survey, and then very brief weekly surveys over an eight-week period. The study is online, and can be done on your mobile, so it's pretty easy to take part.

Participating athletes will receive a personalised feedback report on their goal progression, sport-non-sport balance, and wellbeing, as well as an evidence-based tip sheet with strategies to enhance wellbeing, recovery, and manage competing sport and non-sport demands. You will also be entered into the prize draw to win one of three $1000 grants to support your sporting dream or one of five $200 gift cards.

Participant benefits

Your participation in this research activity is greatly appreciated. Insights will be used to advance current understanding of elite athlete wellbeing and career management. Learnings will be supplied to the Queensland Academy of Sport (QAS), Queensland Olympic Committee (QOC), and Queensland Sports Foundation (QSF), to inform the development of future interventions and resources to support athletes.

Benefits for participants include:

  • The QSF is kindly supporting athlete involvement in this research through their provision of a prize draw. Upon completion of the study, you will be entered into the prize draw to win one of three $1000 grants to support your sporting dream or one of five $200 gift cards. Please note that only eligible participants can participate in the research and be entered into the prize draw. The lucky prize winners will be requested to provide proof of high-level athlete status (i.e., elite or professional level, see eligibility criteria below) to secure receipt of their prize.
  • Receipt of a personalised feedback report on your goal progression, sport-non-sport balance, and wellbeing, and how these factors fluctuated over the eight-week study period, as well as an evidence-based tip sheet with strategies to enhance wellbeing, recovery, and manage competing sport and non-sport demands.
  • Finally, when it is available, we will share with participants a summary of the research findings.

Eligibility

Who can participate? All elite, professional, or high-level athletes who:

  • Are Australian; and
  • Are 18 years of age or older; and
  • Have been training for and/or competing in at least one high-level sport for the last 6 months; and
  • Are currently recognised by any State Institute/Sport Academy, the AIS, an NSO, a University Sports College or Scholarship Scheme, or who are playing within a professional-league or at a professional-level; and
  • Have reliable access to the internet (i.e., on a computer or mobile device).
