Dr Jessica Hill from UQ's School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences featured on Nine News with therapy dog Elsa, discussing an Australian-first pilot program giving students hands on experience with animal assisted therapy.
During sessions occupational therapy students work with Elsa and Jess to help children develop skills such as managing emotions, developing a morning routine and play skills.
The opportunity to work with Elsa broadens the skillsets of students and strengthens their ability to innovatively use techniques. It also helps build rapport between a child and therapist and increases engagement in the session.
