Prepare for your placement

As a health student, you will undertake clinical and/or industry placements throughout your program.

In some programs, placements will commence in your first semester.  Students consistently say that their placements are one of the most exciting and rewarding aspects of their program.  Placements allow you to put theory into practice, and graduate confident and ready to commence a dynamic career in your chosen field.  Placements provide a wealth of exposure and real-time learning, where you will gain a clear and vital understanding of life as a health professional. They can take place in a variety of settings, including public and private hospitals, private clinics, professional organisations and community centres.

There are a range of placement requirements that you are required to meet before you go on placement. As a professional-in-training, it is your responsibility to ensure that you are placement ready. Many of these requirements are documents that you will need to renew for the rest of your career, so this is the first step in your journey to becoming a health care professional.

Across your academic journey you may hear placement opportunities referred to by a number of different terms, such as, work-integrated learning (WIL), practicum, immersions, industry project, and/or active learning. Regardless of the terminology there are a number of tasks to be completed to be eligible to participate.

Failure to submit all of the required documents by the due date will mean that you won’t be able to attend your placement. This will significantly impact on your ability to progress through your program.

What do I need to do?

There is a lot to do so you should allow yourself plenty of time to complete these tasks.  Some of them can require up to three months lead time so you will need to be well organised and methodical. The requirements you will need to complete prior to attending your placement will vary depending on your discipline and the placement site. Refer to the links below and review your discipline's pre-placement requirements.
