In recognition of National Stroke Week (5 to 11 August), we caught up with researchers across the Faculty to get a snapshot of stroke research taking place in Health and Behavioural Sciences.
Dr Kirstine Shrubsole
School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences
Dr Shrubsole’s research focuses on improving implementation of evidence into practice in stroke and aphasia services. She has demonstrated that practice change is achievable for healthcare teams working in aphasia, leading to positive outcomes for patients, clinicians, and organisations. She aims to improve aphasia services through developing the Aphasia Implementation Toolkit.

Dr Hudson is a speech-language pathologist whose research focuses on improving quality of life for people with aphasia following stroke. Her research themes include: reducing psychosocial impacts and helping people to live successfully with aphasia, developing technology-enhanced interventions, and improving research and healthcare accessibility for people with aphasia.
Associate Professor Sarah Wallace
School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences.
Associate Professor Wallace conducts research in post-stroke aphasia (impaired language/communication). Her research themes include: Design and implementation of a national audit system to drive quality improvement in aphasia services; Development and implementation of methodological standards to improve research quality; Development of technology-enhanced interventions to support self-management and equitable access to information and services.

Dr Emmah Doig
School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences, STARS Education and Research Alliance and Metro North Health.
Dr Doig’s research focusses on improving outcomes for people with brain injury. A current research project is the Falls In Stroke Study (FISS). Dr Doig and a team of researchers from UQ, Nottingham, La Trobe, Sydney and Canberra universities are examining the effectiveness of Action Falls, a falls prevention intervention, for reducing falls in people with stroke living in the community.
