Bio

Dr. Peter Worthy is a Lecturer in the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science.  He is an Interaction Designer, focusing on human-computer interaction and technology co-design.  Most recently he has been working on technology design project with people living with dementia and people living with aphasia. Awarded a Ph.D. in 2020, his thesis explored design-based approaches to embedded technology in domestic contexts. Dr. Worthy has worked on projects, such as the LifeCHAT and Tech-CBT initiatives, developing technology applications to support self-management of therapy by people living with dementia and people living with aphasia aphasia. His work spans collaborative engagements with clinicians, health professionals, engineers, and technology developers to design user-centric technologies like smart systems using natural language processing, physical interactive devices, and therapy web platforms and apps.

Abstract

This seminar explores four projects aimed at including people living with dementia in the co-design of research and technology. From utilizing multidisciplinary approaches in the Florence Project to personalizing Smart Assistant conversations, each initiative underscores the importance of inclusive, co-design methodologies that actively involve people living with dementia in all stages of research. Together, they demonstrate how technology can be sensitively designed to better support the needs of people living with dementia. The seminar invites reflection on the broader implications of these approaches, stimulating further discourse and action towards more inclusive practices across various technological domains.
