Mapping minor stroke outcomes (Winter)

Medical advances and clinical guidelines on rehabilitation have reduced the impact of disability from severe stroke.

Yet, less is known about the needs of people who suffer a minor stroke. Consequently, they are likely to be missed after leaving hospital and without an appropriate systemic response, and are at risk of adverse health and social outcomes. The aim of this project is to map and understand the health, service and social needs of this underserviced, minor stroke population. Data for the project has already been collected. The winter research project will involve transcribing and analysing interview data from a cohort of 20 minor stroke patients 2 weeks and 2 months after their discharge home from hospital. This project will help us to better understand the unmet needs of minor stroke patients, which will assist us to design more effective management pathways for this patient group.

Expected outcomes and deliverables:

Scholars will gain skills in patient interview transcription and the coding process using qualitative data analysis.  A finalised coding framework will be prepared and some preliminary analysis conducted with the qualitative data.
