Vaccine rollout in regional and remote Australia and why Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities are lagging behind

19 August 2021

Professor James Ward from UQ Poche Centre spoke to Triple J Hack about vaccinations for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples and the need for culturally specific and tailored messaging.

"Time and time again we have demonstrated and we have informed government that there needs to be culturally specific and tailored messaging for people not in the dominate culture.

"We know that mainstream messages don't always cut through.

"The health status of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in this country is the poorest of any identifiable population in the country.

"And because of this greater burden of disease, either chronic disease or infectious disease in our population, that places our populationright now in the middle of this pandemic at a greater risk for acquiring COVID."

The story runs in the first seven minutes of the show.
