Mater and The University of Queensland have a long-standing relationship over a number of healthcare disciplines, which was further strengthened in 2013 when the two organisations entered into an Alliance Agreement to create an outstanding clinical teaching environment that would allow students to experience the best of theory and practise in a tertiary teaching hospital.
In 2014 works began on the Mater-Whitty redevelopment, the centrepiece of the UQ Mater Alliance. Completed in April 2016, the restoration and refurbishment of the Whitty Building, which includes a new education centre and clinical school for nursing, midwifery, allied health, and medical students and world-class training facilities, offers students a unique clinical teaching environment.
The precinct accommodates over 400 students, and allows for the delivery of customised nursing and midwifery programs with simulation spaces and breakout areas for individual and group study.
