Professor Kevin Thomas from UQ's Queensland Alliance for Environmental Health Sciences spoke with ABC Radio Brisbane Evenings about the high rates of drugs found in wastewater.
"Our study shows that methamphetamine is used pretty much across Australia and Queensland is one of those states that methamphetamine consumption has steadily increased back from pre-pandemic levels back to where we are today.
"We can detect very low levels of metabolites, so when someone consumes the drug it's transformed within the body into what we call a metabolite and that's excreted down the toilet."
The interview runs from the 1 hour and 28 minute mark.
