Lyrics processing in popular music: An online music listening study

UQ researchers from the Language Neuroscience Laboratory are seeking music-lovers to participate in an online music listening study

The aims of the study are to better understand how lyrics in music are processed, and whether these processes change as we age. This could ultimately inform us on how music can be used as an educational tool or used in rehabilitation for people with language impairments after a stroke.

The study will involve listening to excerpts of popular songs or spoken lyrics and completing a word task. You will also be asked to rate your familiarity with the excerpts heard. The study will be completed across two, separate 30 minute sessions spaced at least one week apart. Prior to completing the online study, we will also have a brief telephone interview to go through a cognitive screener and some demographic questions.

Eligibility

• Aged 18-35 years old or 60+
• Proficient in English
• No significant vision or hearing impairments
• No language or music processing impairments
• Able to access computer, headphones, and internet
