This research partners with parents to identify families’ needs for support during children’s transition to primary school.

Transitioning to formal schooling is an important milestone that affects both the child and their parents. As a child transits into formal schooling, both children and parents have to adapt to a new environment in school and the demands that come with this change.

Parents have been identified as a critical factor in supporting their child’s schooling journey. During this transition, parents frequently seek help and advice about their child’s development and academic readiness. Even though there have been various support strategies and transition programs to support parents, the parent voice (e.g., views, experiences, preferences) is missing from existing research. Therefore, it is important to understand the needs and preferences of parents as their child is transiting into formal schooling.

This project may increase our understanding of the needs of parents and families in relation to school transition and readiness. This information may be used to inform the development of a program to promote successful transitions and readiness for school.

Participation in this study consists of either a short online survey, or a 1-on-1 interview. Both explore your child’s development, any concerns, challenges, and difficulties in transitioning to school, and your needs and preferences for information, intervention, and support for your child’s transition to school.
