UQ researchers are seeking teenagers and their parents and teachers for a study aiming to develop a healthy screen use program.

There are two studies involved in this project:

  1. For parents and guardians of teenagers in Year 7 to Year 9 in Australia.
  2. For teenagers in Year 7 to Year 9 in Australia.

Parents and teachers study

Are you a parent or guardian of a teen in Year 7 to Year 9? Or are you a teacher or school counsellor working with adolescents?

We’re conducting a study to develop a family-based program that promotes healthier screen habits for teens, and we need your valuable insights. Teens today are immersed in digital environments, spending hours on screens each day, which can be either beneficial or detrimental to their physical, mental and academic well-being. Parents and educators play key roles in managing adolescents’ screen use, yet there is limited guidance on how to navigate these challenges effectively. By participating in this study, you can help design strategies that promote healthy screen use for teens and support families in managing digital habits.

What’s involved?

  • Participate in 2 face-to-face workshops (1.5 hours each) at The University of Queensland.
  • Share your experiences and concerns about managing teens’ screen use, whether as a parent/guardian or as a professional working with adolescents.
  • Engage in collaborative discussions with other parents, educators, and researchers to explore diverse perspectives.
  • Help brainstorm and co-create effective strategies for a family-based program aimed at healthier screen habits.

Teenager study

Are you a Year 7 to Year 9 student in Australia? Do screens play a major role in your daily life? We’re conducting a study to understand how teens like you manage screen activities like TV viewing, gaming, social media, and internet browsing. We want to hear your thoughts, needs and experiences to help design a program that supports young people and their families in developing healthier screen habits. To make this happen, we need you to join collaborative and creative workshops where you can share ideas with peers and work together on practical

solutions. Your voice is key to creating strategies that work for young people like you.

What's involved?

  • Participate in 2 face-to-face workshops (1.5 hours each) at The University of Queensland, St Lucia.
  • Share your experiences with screen use, including your needs, what has worked and hasn’t worked for you.
  • Engage in fun, creative discussions with your peers to explore different perspectives on screen use.
  • Collaborate to brainstorm solutions that could be part of a family-based program for healthy screen use
