This study seeks to understand sedentary behaviour in desk workers with disability and how these workers are currently considered, included, and supported in workplace wellbeing programs to reduce prolonged sedentary time.

What is this study about?

Too much sedentary time (sitting, reclining or lying with low energy expenditure) has now been acknowledged as a risk factor for poor health and early death. Desk work has been identified as a key risk for prolonged, unbroken sedentary time. Interventions are now available to support desk workers to reduce their sedentary behaviour. However, it is unclear how suitable these interventions are for workers with disability.

Disability is defined as as any limitation, restriction, or impairment that restricts everyday activities and has lasted, or is likely to last, for at least six months and can be physical (e.g., spinal cord injury, arthritis, amputees, spina bifida etc.), sensory (e.g., vision impairment, hearing impairment etc.), psycho-social or behavioural (e.g., depression, anxiety, attention deficit disorder, autism spectrum disorder etc.), intellectual/cognitive (e.g., down syndrome etc.), head injury, stroke, or acquired brain injury.

What will the study involve?

You will be directed to an online survey if you agree to participate and consent below. The survey includes questions about you, your organisation, your work, your sedentary and activity time at work, current strategies you and your workplace use to be less sedentary, your perspective on sedentary behaviour, and your perceived barriers and enablers to workplace sedentary activities. It will take approximately 10 minutes to complete. Participants who complete the online survey can go into a draw for a $50 Coles/Myer gift voucher as a token of appreciation for their time.
