About this research

The research aims to understand what and how factors (across domains of biology, psychology, sociology and behaviour) relate to back pain.

Who can participate

You’re eligible to participate in the study if you:

  • Are 18 years or older and have experienced low back pain on at least 2 days (does not need to be consecutive days) in the past month that was sufficient enough to limit function.

You are ineligible to participate in the study if you:

  • have known or suspected serious spinal pathology
  • have a history of surgery to the spine
  • have had major pain or injury to other body regions in the previous 12 months
  • are currently/recently pregnant (post-partum <6 months)
  • are currently using non-steroidal anti-rheumatic drugs, anti-cytokine therapy or corticosteroids.

If you are unsure about your eligbility, please email nih-f@uq.edu.au

What's involved

You will be asked to:

  • download a free application on your smartphone. Researchers will use this app to gather information related to your back pain.
  • complete questionnaires.

Each day you will receive a notification to respond to simple questions about your pain and condition (~3 minutes to complete).

You might be asked to complete a follow-up questionnaire, for a maximum of two occasions every week for 12 weeks.

You will have the opportunity to withdraw from these procedures at any time.

Benefits of participating

Participants will be remunerated with a $100 AUD voucher upon completion of the 3-month study.
